Press: The Witcher on Netflix: Who will play Geralt?

Press: The Witcher on Netflix: Who will play Geralt?

THE WITCHER on Netflix is still a long way off but fans of the books and video games are eager to see who will be cast in the lead role of Geralt of Rivia.

Netflix is currently in the process of adapting book and video game The Witcher to series.

The hugely popular fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski have legions of fans globally who are eagerly anticipating the small screen adaptation.

Writers are already hard at work on the script with showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich regularly tweeting updates.

The release date is still a long way off however, with the show not expected to be out until 2020.

Fans have been speculating endlessly about the casting possibilities for the much loved characters.

The books follow a group of supernatural monster hunters led by Geralt of Rivia.

Known for his long icy blonde hair, the protagonist is is a monster hunter for hire who possesses superhuman abilities and master swordsman skills.

Also known as the ‘White Wolf’, Geralt is a “mutated monster hunter, struggling to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts”.

Who will play Gerald on The Witcher on Netflix?

Fan favourites to be cast as Geralt include Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and actor Mads Mikkelson.

Another fan choice is Zach McGowan from Black Sails, The 100 and Shameless.

However, a certain Hollywood A-lister has just thrown their name in the hat to take on the role.

Henry Cavill aka Superman, has said he wants to play Geralt in the upcoming series.

When asked if he was interested in the role by IGN this week, Cavill responded: “Absolutely. Yeah, that would be an amazing role.”

He also said he’s a fan of the books.

Artist Bosslogic has run with the idea of Cavill taking on the role and created an image of the actor as Geralt and posted it to their Instagram.

Other actors who fans have been suggesting include Viking’s star Travis Fimmel and Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy.

Casting for the series officially began back in June, so hopefully some announcements will be made at some stage this year.

Schmidt Hissrich tweeted at the time: “So. Let’s talk casting. Yes, I said the magic word! Casting is starting soon, and no, I can’t tell you who our top picks are so don’t ask.”

Another character fabs are excited to see cast is Yennefer, with actress Eva Green from Penny Dreadful the fan favourite at the moment.

Star Wars’ Mark Hamill has said he wants to play the part of Vesemir, Geralt’s father figure.

Responding to a tweet about Vesemir he tweeted: “I have no idea what this is or what it’s about but agree it could/should be played by me.”

Regardless of who will eventually be chosen, the casting process is underway so fans will have to wait and see.

The Witcher is set to be released on Netflix in 2020.

Press: ‘The Walking Dead’ Time Jump Length Revealed

Press: ‘The Walking Dead’ Time Jump Length Revealed

There’s going to be a lot of change when it comes to this season of The Walking Dead. Some of those changes will be thrilling, such as the introduction of beloved comic villains The Whisperers, while other changes will be a bit tough to swallow, such as the departures of Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan. One change, however, that’s really exciting is that season 9 will be jumping forward in time, allowing for a fresh start and the opportunity for new stories to flesh out rather than build up.

“We’re playing with time in the season, so we get to jump forward in the story,” Kang said at a Walking Dead panel earlier this year.

Well, thanks to The Walking Dead’s Preview Special this past Sunday on AMC, we now know just how long that time jump will be. While guest-host Yvette Nicole Brown was interviewing new showrunner Angela Kang, Khary Payton (King Ezekiel), and Tom Payne (Jesus), Payne revealed that the show would be jumping forward18 months” in the story.

While there is still a bit of mystery surrounding just where our survivors will all be after a year and a half, we do know that the communities are all thriving together in one common area, that Maggie will have finally had her baby (with the most perfect name), Heath may finally be coming back, and that some popular comic characters will be making their appearance. Fantastic Beast’s star Samantha Morton will be joining the cast as Whisperers leader, AlphaEntourage’s Rhys Coiro and The 100’s Zach McGowan will be playing Savior’s Jed and Justin, with The X-Files’ alum John Finn stepping in to play Earl, and Brett Butler will plat Tammy.

Despite the show entering an impressive ninth season with an 18 month time jump, the cast and creators can’t stop talking about how much the show feels like the early seasons that were adored by fans, especially in the upcoming premiere.

“I think there was a lot of the pilot episode that was reminiscent of this opening episode and also a couple of other episodes, too. We have a few surprises as we both know, but we’re not allowed to talk about them,” Lincoln said.

Press: Death Race: Beyond Anarchy Home Video Release Date

It feels like forever ago when we interviewed writer Tony Giglio about his film Death Race: Anarchy, which was originally supposed to come out in January earlier this year only to be indefinitely delayed. However, Universal has revealed a new trailer (below) and release date for when people can enjoy vehicular manslaughter on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital and that date is October 2!

Giglio told us, “The film is the fastest 1 hour and 50 minutes you’ll ever see. The world of Death Race: Beyond Anarchy is darker, more dangerous, and mixes all the best parts of Escape from New Yorkwith Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Danny Trejo returns as the ruthless bookie, Goldberg, in the wildest, bloodiest, Death Race ever. After a failed attack on inmate and legendary driver, Frankenstein, Black Ops specialist Connor Gibson (Zach McGowan) infiltrates a super-maximum federal prison with one goal – enter the immoral and illegal Death Race and take Frankenstein down. Connor enlists the help of Baltimore Bob (Danny Glover) and Lists (Fred Koehler), and unexpectedly falls in love with bartending beauty Jane (Christine Marzano). Connor will have to fight for more than his life in this brutal world of no guards, no rules, no track, and no fear.

Written by Giglio and directed by Don Michael Paul, Death Race: Beyond Anarchy stars Danny Trejo, Zach McGowan, Christine Marzano, and Fred Koehler.

Press: Five Reasons I’m Actually Hopeful About ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 9

Press: Five Reasons I’m Actually Hopeful About ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 9

The Walking Dead fanbase has been down in the dumps for a while now after a pair of lackluster seasons for the Negan War, the recent non-comic-based death of (spoilers) Carl, and now news that Andrew Lincoln, Rick Grimes himself, is leaving the show.

And yet, after SDCC this week, I find myself…looking forward to season 9 quite a bit. The show produced one hell of a trailer for season 9, which I highly recommend you watch below, but past the fact that it looked pretty promising, there are a few things I’m really looking forward to seeing unfold this season.

First, watch the trailer, then let’s talk:

      Angela Kang

I am genuinely looking forward to seeing what new showrunner Angela Kang has in store for The Walking Dead, partially because yes, I am desperate to get out of the Scott Gimple era at this point, but also because every interview I’ve read or seen with Kang, she comes off really well, like she understands the issues that have plagued the show and what we need to see going forward. While I don’t know if she’s going to be a magic bullet to fix everything that ails the show, she has given me faith that she knows what she’s doing and is going to try to make something different and great, recapturing what people loved about the show years ago. We’ll see how it goes, but I am definitely interesting in seeing what she has planned.

      A Return To Mystery

While there were obviously some changes to the Negan War from the page to the screen, the past two years stuck with the general framework of the comics for the most part. But now for at least the first half of season 9, we seem to be taking a detour into unknown territory. We have the mystery of Jadis and the helicopter to solve, something that has nothing to do with anything we’ve seen in the comics, and also the group is heading to Washington DC on an adventure, again, something that does not take place in the source material. We know that yes, we are heading toward the comic-based Whisperer plotline (as teased at the end of the trailer), but I’m hoping for some solid season 4/5-like non-comic content to take us places we’re not expecting.

      The 100 Actors

Not one but two actors from one of my favorite shows, The 100, are joining The Walking Dead this season, which I am extremely excited to see. One is Nadia Hilker who will be playing Magna, a much-anticipated character from the comics, and the other is Zach McGowan, also a veteran of Black Sails and Agents of SHIELD, who will be playing Jed, an unknown character who we saw brawling with Daryl more than once in the season 9 trailer. The 100 already gave Fear the Walking Dead its best actress in Alycia Debnam-Carey, so I’m excited to see what these two do here.

      The Whisperers

I was wondering if The Walking Dead was just going to skip the Whisperer comic storyline altogether, but after hearing those whispers in the trailer, I have to say I am looking forward to seeing that adaption onscreen. I am most curious about how it’s going to be handled given the fact that Carl essentially is the star of this storyline, and he’s…not exactly around anymore. Still, I think Whisperers have the potential to be even more terrifying than the Saviors onscreen if handled correctly, and if the show can fix some of the comic’s problems with this storyline. Overall, I’m glad they’re doing it.

      Rick’s Departure

While I am not looking forward to Rick being off of The Walking Dead, I am kind of looking forwarding to seeing how Rick leaves The Walking Dead, given that it has to be totally outside the bounds of the comics, where he’s still running the show. My worst fear is that they sacrifice him to The Whisperers to recreate a horrifying comic moment, as I think he deserves better than that. So hopefully, that leaves some sort of heroic ending for him, or there’s a far-flung theory that he will be able to leave the show without actually dying, perhaps being kidnapped and showing up again several years from now when Lincoln wants to return. One of the biggest quotes out of SDCC is Lincoln saying his relationship with Rick Grimes is “far from over,” despite acknowledging he was leaving the show. That could just mean he’ll continue to show up at conventions, or it could mean something else entirely. I am curious to find out what he and the writers have planned, even if I don’t want to see him leave.

Press/Video/Photos: ‘Walking Dead’ Unveils Season 9 Trailer, Premiere Date at Comic-Con

Press/Video/Photos: ‘Walking Dead’ Unveils Season 9 Trailer, Premiere Date at Comic-Con

AMC just released the first full season 9 trailer for The Walking Dead. All I can say is things look like they are about to get intense, and it looks like Zach’s character Justin is really taking a beating. You can check out the video with accompanying article from Variety below. I also added a few screencaps to the gallery. Unfortunately, the scenes with Zach are quick, and you can’t see him very clearly.

The long-running AMC zombie series showed off the first official trailer for its upcoming ninth season on Friday.

The trailer debuted at “The Walking Dead’s” Comic-Con panel following the “Fear the Walking Dead” presentation, which featured its own trailer for the upcoming season. AMC also announced the new season’s premiere date: Oct. 7 at 9 p.m.

Season 9 picks up after the conclusion of the all-out war the survivors waged against Negan and his Saviors, focusing on Andrew Lincoln’s character, Rick Grimes, picking up the pieces and putting together the utopian society for a post-apocalyptic world. The footage featured Grimes and the rest of the survivors assembling infrastructure in their new society, as well as conversations with an imprisoned Negan. The trailer also showed tensions running high as supposedly reformed saviors clash with other survivors in disputes about how their new civilization should function and treat one another.

The walkers still remain an ever-present threat, as the trailer also contained cuts of Grimes and company fighting off the undead onslaught.

Lincoln also confirmed at the panel that he will leave the show this next season after leading it since its start in 2010.

The series also stars Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Lennie James, Alanna Masterson, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Austin Amelio, Tom Payne, Xander Berkeley, Khary Payton, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Press: Bad Boys TV spinoff L.A.’s Finest finally gets picked up

Press: Bad Boys TV spinoff L.A.’s Finest finally gets picked up

After plenty of back and forth, the Bad Boys television spinoff is a go.

As announced by Deadline, Charter Communications has officially picked up L.A.’s Finest as its first scripted series. The company, the second-largest cable operator in the U.S. based on subscriber count, handed the project a 13-episode, straight-to-series order.

L.A.’s Finest stars Gabrielle Union as Special Agent Syd Burnett, the character she first played the 2003 film Bad Boys II, and Jessica Alba as Nancy McKenna, a hard-working mother and detective at the Los Angeles Police Department. After Syd packs up her life and heads for the state whose women Katy Perry once wrote a whole song about, she’s partnered up with Nancy — her polar opposite. The women lead very different lives and approach their work from their own unique angles, but together, they capitalize on their shared strengths to become — you guessed it — L.A.’s finest.

Charter Communications will be the stateside home of L.A.’s Finest, with the series living at Bell Media in Canada. Like Charter just did, the Toronto-based digital media and broadcasting company ordered 13 episodes of the project in a straight-to-series deal earlier this year.

News of Charter picking up L.A.’s Finest comes after months of build up, casting announcements, title reveals, and the disappointing break that NBC passed on the pilot. Once word got out that the network was no longer interested in the project, Sony Television began shopping it internationally. Jeff Frost, President of Sony Pictures TV, is confident that Charter is the perfect place for L.A.’s Finest.

“Charter has a strong passion for the project, and we could not be more excited,” Frost said in a statement. “Immediately we knew this innovative new platform was absolutely the right home for L.A.’s Finest.”

In addition to Union and Alba, the series also stars Ernie Hudson as Joseph Burnett, Zack Gilford as Ben Walker, Duane Martin as Ben Baines, Zach McGowan as Ray Sherman, and Ryan McPartlin as Patrick McKenna. L.A.’s Finest has former CSI: NY showrunner Pam Veasey attached as co-showrunner alongside writers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier.

Billed as an “action-packed, character-driven procedural,” L.A.’s Finest will premiere on Charter Communication’s Spectrum channel sometime in 2019.

Press: Zach McGowan reportedly joining Season 9 of The Walking Dead

Press: Zach McGowan reportedly joining Season 9 of The Walking Dead

While no official announcement has been made, it appears as if The Walking Dead has added Zach McGowan to the cast of Season 9. The question is, who will McGowan play in the ever-expanding world of The Walking Dead.

At the moment, production on The Walking Dead’s ninth season is in full force. Shooting is underway and the cast members are getting to know some newcomers. One of the newest additions to the cast is Zach McGowan. He hasn’t officially been cast but an Instagram post by Pollyanna McIntosh all but confirms his involvement.

In the post, McIntosh is joined by her co-stars from The Walking Dead and McGowan. The accompanying text doesn’t explicitly welcome McGowan to the cast but the commenters who’ve seen the image all seemed to come to that conclusion. At the same time, McGowan’s own fan club congratulated him on getting the part. So, it’s probably safe to say he has an upcoming role on the series.

As far as who McGowan could be playing is anyone’s guess. Though, a popular theory online suggests he’s Beta of The Whisperers. McGowan has the hair and looks for the part but there’s no way to tell if that’s who he’s portraying, especially when The Whisperers haven’t been introduced yet.

The other possibility is for McGowan to play a member of Magna’s group. Casting for Magna was recently announced, meaning her character will need some company. Yumiko, Magna’s girlfriend from the comics was included in the announcement but we should also expect more members of her group to join them. Any of whom could be played by Zach McGowan.

Is Zach McGowan playing a member of Magna’s group?

If McGowan is set to play a member of Magna’s group, he probably won’t play one of the guys who gets devoured when they run into Jesus, in the comics.

In the comics, when Magna’s group is surrounded by a herd of walkers, Jesus stumbles upon them. He manages to get Magna and her group to safety but a few of them die in the process. Jesus then takes Magna and her group back to the Alexandria Safe-Zone.

The reason McGowan’s character will survive for a few episodes is that as an actor, he hasn’t had too many brief television roles. While he has made one-time appearances before, McGowan has mostly taken on recurring roles. Therefore, it goes to reason that his part on The Walking Dead will be similar.

Press: Zach McGowan Joins NBC’s ‘Bad Boys’ Spinoff

The ‘100’ and ‘Shameless’ star will play the main villain opposite Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba in the untitled drama pilot.

NBC’s untitled Bad Boys spinoff has found its main villain.

Zach McGowan, most recently known for his role as Ice Nation King Roan in CW’s post-apocalyptic drama The 100, is set to star opposite Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba in the NBC drama pilot. McGowan, who has starred in shows including Agents of Shield, Black Sails and Shameless, will play a slick-suited hustler who runs a nightclub.

McGowan’s character — Ray Sherman — has a violent encounter with Union’s LAPD homicide detective Syd Burnett (Union, reprising her role from Bad Boys II), who is looking for a criminal he is apparently in business with.

The project revolves around the free-spirited former DEA agent Syd getting a fresh start in her new job. She is partnered with Nancy McKenna (Alba), a working mom who can’t help but look at Syd’s freedom with some grass-is-greener envy. Both are at the top of their fields in the action-packed, character-driven procedural.

The untitled drama was written by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis (The Blacklist). The project hails from Sony Pictures Television, Jerry Bruckheimer Television, Primary Wave and 2.0 Entertainment. (Sony’s Columbia produced the original Bad Boys films alongside Bruckheimer.)

Alongside Bad Boys, which is currently shooting, McGowan has recently wrapped period drama Damnation for USA Network (Netflix will stream it internationally). On the feature film side, he has both Death Race: Beyond Anarchy and Universal’s Scorpion King: Book of Souls, the latter in which he plays the title role, coming up.

McGowan is represented by ICM Partners and Primary Wave Entertainment.

Press: Zach McGowan on the set of Scorpion King talks about his love for Cape Town

Press: Zach McGowan on the set of Scorpion King talks about his love for Cape Town

Channel24’s Graye Morkel visited the set of Scorpion King: Book of Souls in Cape Town recently and sat down with American actor Zach McGowan to talk about what went on behind-the-scenes of the film.

Cape Town – Walking through the large industrial doors onto the set of Scorpion King: Book of Souls I’m immediately transported to a fantasy world molded and sculpted to represent ancient lairs and mystical caves.

I’m greeted by an easy-going cast, and crew while patiently waiting my turn to interview Zach McGowan and Pearl Thusi.

I’m seated next to a friendly stunt-double and production assistant, and opposite us a “monster” made-up with prosthetic material and latex waits to be called on.

I’m invited to watch (quietly) as the team wrap up the last scene before lunch, and I’m surprised by a request to join the cast and crew for refreshments.

Later I’m making small-talk with Zach McGowan in the drizzling rain – who I’ve seen on Shameless, UnREAL and Blacksails – while he casually smokes a cigarette, before he escorts me to a quiet area where we conduct the interview.

ON WHAT DREW HIM TO THE MOVIE

McGowan worked with Don Michael Paul on Death Race: Beyond Anarchy and when the opportunity arose to work with the well-known director and producer once more his immediate response was “of course!”

He says: “We had such a fantastic time working together before. When he sent me the script it was just such a great tale, and very similar to the movies that I loved as a kid.

“The movie is rated PG-13 which means that at some point my kids will be able to watch it. It’s tough because most of the work I’ve done is not rated for kids. What drew me to the movie is a combination of the two things, and I’m always down to work with Don.”

Speaking about his character Mathays (The Scorpion King) he says: “When we first meet him, Mathayas is living the simple life in a small village as a blacksmith, when the evil forces seek him out. He is then forced to fight because innocent people are being slaughtered. He gets beat up pretty bad, but Pearl Thusi (Tala) saves him and convinces him to go on this quest.”

    ON FILMING IN CAPE TOWN

Scorpion King: Book of Souls was filmed entirely in and around Cape Town and McGowan’s favorite scenes were filmed on the sand dunes in Atlantis.

“Riding the horses through those beautiful mountainous dunes and sand locations is just such an archetypal image. And they [production] let us ride through these vast landscapes. It was just such a pleasure as an actor. I’ve never been able to do these type of archetypal work. A lot of my horse work has been more contained, so this was certainly a high point for me.”

On his South African co-star Pearl Thusi he says: “I thought she looked absolutely perfect when I was first told about her joining the cast, but you never know how someone is going to be. But we’ve had so much fun together in all these amazing locations.”

He adds: “We have a lot of downtime so we have so much fun together. We’ll blast the music in the cast tent and have a dance party.”

McGowan, who spent three years in Cape Town while working on Black Sails, says he has fallen in love with the energy in Cape Town and missed working with his friends from Black Sails – who most have rejoined him on this new production.

“I think there are only like 10 people that I don’t know on this set.”

When he has some time off – which is one day per week – he enjoys going the ocean and really appreciates our local cuisine.

“There is a reason people come here for vacation and to work here. Of course the American dollar goes a long way too,” he laughs.

While working away from home for such long periods of time, McGowan always travels with photos of his daughters. He says: “It’s nice to fall asleep next to the photo of my family.”

He also never leaves home without an abundant supply of hair ties, as our locally produced hair accessories he says just don’t cut it! “I wear them around my fingers, and people often mistake them for rings.”

    ON COMEDY VS. ACTION

McGowan has portrayed characters on a vast genre of movies and TV series, including comedies (Shameless), and hard-hitting action roles (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) but says he approaches all roles in the same way.

“What I do with the role as an actor really isn’t any different regardless of the material. People think that action movies are about fighting but actually all script contain dialogue and action. Dramas tend to be heavy on the dialogue and light on action. But actions refers to what the actor is doing. On Shameless I was doing a lot of action, it might just not have been fighting action.”

“For instance on Shameless breastfeeding a baby is actually action. You don’t say it, you do it. I just want to be real and in the moment, whether it be swinging a sword or breastfeeding a baby.”

Having worked on so many interesting productions before, McGowan says he always keeps a memento from the set.

“I keep all my chair backs [he turns his chair around and points at the large printed letters “Zach”] and at this point I might need a bigger office,” he laughs. “I have a collection of swords from Black Sails, and I kept my drums from Shameless.”

This might also be a good time to point out that I was sitting on Pearl Thusi’s chair.

He cracks another joke, “I’m wearing my leopard print thong from Shameless underneath my costume right now.”

He ends off the interview with a message to his South African fans: “I love you, and always keep watching.”
